5 year ROI for Merton London Borough Council solar PV schools projects
Project: Commercial
Location: London
Sector: Public Sector
Services: rooftop solar PV
Date: August 2017
Client
Merton London Borough Council is the local authority for the London Borough of Merton in Greater London, England.
Challenge
Merton London Borough Council wanted to reduce their expenditure on electricity and to reduce their carbon footprint. As part of their strategy, they wanted to use funds allocated for projects in 2030 to invest in technologies that would provide a maximum 10 year payback period and this included solar PV for 4 schools across the Borough.
Solution
Consultation
We started off with an assessment of the school buildings including the roof condition, electrical set-up and energy consumption.
Detailed design
- We provided financial modeling of the most efficient solution
- Designs were optimised to get the most efficiency out of the panels, including mounting and shade analysis
- The electrical design included G59 connection to the grid
Installation and handover
Our commercial solar team installed a 308 kwh system – 1032 high-performance solar panels and the electrical work for the 4 school buildings over the 6 week Summer holiday. We provided full handover documentation including MCS registration.
Technologies
Inverters: Solas and Solar Edge
Panels: JA Solar and BiSol
Results
Together, the four schools will result in X in efficiency savings and reduce emissions by X tCO2e (tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent) per year. Merton London Borough Council is on track to see a return on investment in around 5 years.
