Project: Commercial, Community

Sector:  Leisure

Service: Solar PV

Date: 2020

Client

Braywick leisure centre is located in beautiful parkland, on the edge of Braywick nature reserve. The iconic facility opened in Summer 2020 and offers a diverse range of leisure, recreational and cultural facilities, all under the sweeping roof of a spacious and beautifully designed environment.

Challenge

Maid Energy Co-operative wanted to install solar panels on the leisure center to get a return on investment for their members whilst also lowering carbon emissions and reducing the energy costs of the leisure centre. Win-win!

Solution

Consultation

We worked with BES Co-op and Maid Energy Co-op to identify the best location to install the panels and to define a safe method of installation.

Detailed design

  • A design was completed that kept within the planning conditions of the site.
  • A gas-fired combined heat and power (CHP) plant had been installed meaning the solar panel system had to have export limitations installed to meet the G99 application conditions.
  • Specialist fixings were specified to satisfy the roofing manufacturer’s warranty conditions.
  • The electrical design included G99 connection to the grid.

Installation and handover

The system was built while the leisure center was operational.   A small site compound was set up on an unused corner of the building and had no impact on the running of the building. The installation went very smoothly despite adverse weather conditions.

Technologies

Inverters: Solis

Panels: Canadian Solar

Results

The leisure centre is now powered by clean solar power, benefiting from reduced energy bills and a lower carbon footprint.  The system is producing returns for Maid Energy’s members and the wider community projects that it supports.
